• What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is the swelling of a limb, or other body parts, when the lymphatic system is not functioning normally. Your Occupational Therapist (OT) has an important role in managing Lymphedema.

  • How can OT help my Lymphedema?

First, Matt conducts an assessment of your affected limb(s) and tries to understand how your daily life is impacted by the Lymphedema you are experiencing. Matt then provides treatment of your affected limb(s) through bandaging, manual lymph drainage, specific exercises, skin care and/or compression garments. These treatment options aim to facilitate the movement of lymphatic fluid back towards the heart to stop and prevent it from pooling in a certain area in the body.

Matt also shares a lot of information with you during your appointment about Lymphedema and any potential complications you may face. The goal of this education is to empower you to self-manage your swelling and be aware of any changes to your symptoms.

Our hope is that through working with Matt, you will find problem-solving strategies to allow you to maintain or increase your independence in daily tasks.
